Martin Laird may not Scotland’s most famous golfer but with his victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando on Sunday he confirmed he is certainly its best golfer.

The 28-year-old Glaswegian, who played college golf in Colorado and has spent almost the entirety of his professional life in the United States, was an impressive winner around a brutal Bay Hill course, recovering from a terrible start to his final round to beat a field that included Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

It was Laird’s second victory in the US and vaulted him to 21st in the world rankings and into the thoughts of many as they seek to identify a potential winner in what could be one of the most open Masters tournaments in years.

“The strengths of my game do fit Augusta National,” he said.
