IRELAND joined Australia at the top of the World Cup leaderboard after a 68 from Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in today’s foursomes lifted them to 13 under par.

Starting the day two behind overnight leaders Australia, the Irish duo produced six birdies and two bogeys in the alternate shot format at the Mission Hills Resort on Hainan Island in China.

It moved them level with Richard Green and Brendon Jones, who posted a 70. Scotland, meanwhile, are one off the pace on 12 under following a 69.

“Today was good,” McIlroy told reporters.

Tiger Woods has already been told he will be part of America’s team for the Presidents Cup in Melbourne in November.

Despite falling sharply down the world rankings, giving his worst-ever performance in a major at the PGA Championship two weeks ago and missing out on the FedEx Cup play-offs, Woods has an assurance from the team captain, Fred Couples, that he will be one of his two wild cards.

“I told him that he’s going to be on the team,” Couples said. “The question came up and there’s no reason for me to wait until 26 September to pick Tiger. He’s the best player in the world forever. Is he playing well right now? No.

Dan Lintner had back-to-back goals to lead the Whitby Warrios to a 5-4 win over the Coquitlam Adanacs on Saturday in the second game of their best-of-three series for the Minto Cup, Canada’s indoor lacrosse junior championship.

The final and deciding game of the Minto Cup tournament will be Sunday.

Mark Matthews scored the winner for Whitby at the 16:34 mark of the third period. Curtis Knight and Emerson Clark also scored for the Warriors.

Casey Jackson scored twice and had two assists for the Adanacs, who lost their first game of the tournament. Ben McIntosh and Jackson Decker also scored for Coquitlam.

Whitby won despite going 0-for-3 on the power play.
