Burnley hand MacDonald new deal

Burnley have handed a new one-year contract to young striker Alex MacDonald.

The 21-year-old made his first-team debut in April 2008 and has so far made eight substitute appearances for the Clarets.

The Scotland Under-21 international has had loan spells with Falkirk and Inverness Caledonian Thistle during the last two seasons.

And after being rewarded with a new deal by Burnley boss Eddie Howe he is eager to make an impact at Turf Moor next term.

“I’m looking forward to this year and hopefully it will be the year to get back in amongst the first team. That’s my aim,” he told the club’s official website.

“I had a taste of it when I was younger here and that’s something I want back, especially at this football club. This is the place where I wanted to be.

“The manager has shown that he is going to give the young lads a chance so hopefully this will be the year for me.

“I feel this is the year I need to get through, otherwise I think it would be time to move on.

“But I am confident in my own ability and I am confident that if I get a good pre-season under my belt I will be there or thereabouts in the first team.”

MacDonald went up to Inverness shortly after Howe was appointed in January and stayed for the rest of the season.

And although MacDonald did not play as much as he wanted – he scored once from two starts and nine substitute appearances – he did enough to impress the Burnley boss.

“The manager didn’t promise anything – I don’t think any manager would do that – but he said he liked the look of me, which was a big confidence booster,” he added.

“The aim was to go up there and play a few games. Unfortunately it didn’t really pan out that way but I thought I did well when I did play and it was good to be rewarded with a new contract when I came back.”
