CC Sabathia struck out 11 in seven shutout innings, Curtis Granderson homered twice and Derek Jeter moved closer to 3,000 career hits as the New York Yankees roughed up the Cleveland Indians 9-2 on Tuesday night.

Jeter went 2 for 6 with a two-run double and has 2,996 hits, leaving him four shy of becoming the 28th major leaguer — and first Yankee — to reach 3,000.

Sabathia (12-4) allowed five hits, walked two and overpowered the team that drafted him in 1998 and traded him 10 years later. Despite leading the league in wins and going 9-1 in his last 10 starts, Sabathia was left off the AL roster for the July 12 All-Star game in Phoenix.

Granderson hit a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the fourth off Carlos Carrasco (8-5), who lasted just four innings. Granderson has 25 home runs this season.

Indians All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left in the fourth with a sprained right ankle. The team said he is day to day.

Royals 5, White Sox 3.

CHICAGO Felipe Paulino struck out nine in six innings for his first victory in more than a year and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Alcides Escobar hit a two-run triple and Matt Treanor had a go-ahead, two-run single for the Royals, who won for the fifth time in 19 games.

Paulino (1-2) was acquired from Colorado for cash on May 26 after starting the season 0-5. He allowed three runs and scattered nine hits while walking two on 120 pitches.

It was Paulino’s first win since June 4, 2010, against the Chicago Cubs. He finished last season 1-9.

For the second time in a week, the White Sox failed to break the .500 barrier. They have not been above .500 since April 15, when they were 7-6.

Twins 3, Rays 2.

MINNEAPOLIS Scott Baker had another impressive start cut short by injury before Glen Perkins bailed out struggling closer Matt Capps in the ninth again to help the Minnesota Twins hang on for a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

Baker (7-5) gave up one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts before leaving after five innings with a mild right elbow strain.

But Capps gave up a homer to B.J. Upton and a base hit to Casey Kotchman to draw boos from the home crowd. He walked Kelly Shoppach with two outs, forcing manager Ron Gardenhire to pull him for the second outing in a row.

Perkins got Johnny Damon to groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Rangers 4, Orioles 2

ARLINGTON, Texas Elvis Andrus hustled home with the go-ahead run in the seventh, the same inning that he made two spectacular defensive plays, and the Texas Rangers went on to a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

When Josh Hamilton singled to score Yorvit Torrealba in the seventh, Andrus ran from first on the play and went headfirst into third ahead of left fielder Nolan Reimold’s throw that ricocheted off the runner toward the Baltimore dugout. Andrus scrambled to his feet and ran home to put Texas up 3-2.

The top of the seventh ended on an acrobatic double play by Andrus. On the play before that, Andrus went deep in the hole to backhand Jones’ grounder and get a force at second.

Angels 1, Tigers 0.

ANAHEIM, Calif. Dan Haren pitched a two-hitter while outdueling Justin Verlander for his 100th career victory, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 Tuesday night for their 10th win in 12 games.

Howie Kendrick scored from first base on Erick Aybar’s second-inning double and the Angels ended Verlander’s streak of nine straight wins. Haren (9-2) finished by retiring 15 straight batters.

Verlander (11-4) was ejected while leaving the mound in the eighth after yielding seven hits and striking out eight. He lost for the first time since April 27, a streak of 12 straight starts.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland also was ejected before the seventh inning. Leyland and Verlander apparently were angry after the umpiring crew ordered Verlander to change balls earlier.

Mariners 4, Athletics 2 (10 inn.).

OAKLAND, Calif. Franklin Gutierrez scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Athletics shortstop Cliff Pennington in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners held on to beat Oakland 4-2 on Tuesday night after wasting a stellar performance by All-Star Felix Hernandez.

Gutierrez singled off A’s closer Andrew Bailey (0-1) leading off the inning and stole second with one out. Brendan Ryan then hit a soft grounder to second baseman Jemile Weeks, who flipped the ball to Pennington for the force at second before Pennington’s relay sailed wide left of first base.

Adam Kennedy followed with an RBI double to make a winner of Brandon League (1-4), who blew a save opportunity in the ninth.

Kurt Suzuki homered for the A’s, who have lost nine of 13.
