RAF soar in for Weymouth Beach Classic

RAF Careers have confirmed their sponsorship for this year’s Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic.

The event, the 29th in the series, will take place from Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31 and it is hoped that many of the British teams attempting to qualify for the Olympics will be in Weymouth for the event.

However, final decisions cannot be made until the last minute as it will depend on their positions on the World Tour.

Even if they do not make it, all the other top British teams will be in attendance, as they to claim the top prize on the British Tour.

The added bonus for this year’s Classic is that it comes just one week before the Olympic Beach Volleyball test event, which is being held in Horseguards Parade.

Meanwhile, in the Weymouth League, Jules Stout and Terry Oldrid bagged another victory, but each week teams are getting closer to them.

It was veterans David Markwick and Glenn Conroy who came closest to defeating them when they met in the semi-final.

The two teams went point for point all the way and in a dramatic finish it came down to the final point which Oldrid and Stout won 17-16 when Conroy hit the ball long.

The other semi-final was equally close with Mike Powell and Mike Jones edging out Rob Semmence and Dom Cosserat, 17-15.

The final though was a little disappointing with Oldrid and Stout finishing comfortable winners, 15-9.

A number of the leading B series teams earned promotion to the A Series this week and this gave some new teams the chance to shine in the B league. Costa Constantine and Tim Warren, playing together for the first time, won the final defeating Laura Stone and Paul Fitzgerald, 21-12.

Players will be back on the beach next Tuesday and any news teams are still very welcome and need to register on the beach between 6pm and 6.30pm.
