If all goes well, Metrodome roof may be inflated Wednesday
St. Paul, Minn. The roof on the Metrodome may go up this week, more than seven months after it collapsed in a blizzard.
Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission officials are planning to re-inflate the dome as soon as Wednesday.
“It is a possibility, if everything falls into place,” said Steve Maki, the director of facilities and engineering for the stadium. “I don’t know yet though. We don’t have all the work done. It’s a potential.”
Workers have been replacing the roof, made of 106 teflon-coated fiberglass panels. A handful of them were damaged by the storm, and engineers feared the rest were deteriorating as the winter wore on.
The deadline for the inflation was Aug. 1, to prepare for a Vikings preseason game versus Dallas on Aug. 27.
Maki said the inflation will depend on whether engineers are satisfied with the panel replacement and good weather. He said they want calm wind conditions for the first inflation.
