Halloran’s reward

ALEX Halloran is to be rewarded with a Terras’ contract after making a solid contribution in his breakthrough season in 2009-10.

Stepping up from the Dorset Premier League the skilful midfielder was Weymouth’s sixth-highest appearance-maker last term and manager Brendon King believes he has nothing left to prove.

Speaking ahead of the club’s first pre-season training session at Redlands tonight, the Terras’ boss said: “Alex made 28 outings for the first team last season so he has not got to prove himself to us.

“If you had told him last summer that he would go on to have such a large involvement he would not have believed you but he has made the most of every single opportunity and that should prove to any local lad out there just what can be achieved.

“The aim for Alex now is to learn from the experience he gained last season. He has certainly given himself a great chance to build on that but once again it will be down to him to train hard and have a good pre-season.”

So far Tom Manley, Jamie Beasley, Warren Byerley and player/assistant-manager Matt Groves are the only four players that have put pen to paper at the Terras, with Nick Jordan and Lewis Tasker both in line to sign later this week.

King added: “We have got nine or 10 trialists coming down tonight, including three from Swindon and two from Exeter, and it will be interesting to see what comes of that but we certainly will not be rushing into any decisions or panicking.

“We are talking to players all the time and we are more than willing to remain patient to see who becomes available.

“Local lads like Lewis Whyton, Jordan Vincent, Richard Marshallsay and Sam Poole will also be there this evening, along with a few others, and I am certainly looking forward to getting back into it.

“We have eight sessions until our first pre-season friendly against Gillingham (July 16) so it does not give us a lot of time and I want us to go into that game raring to go.

“I would like to think all of the players have looked after themselves over the last couple of months and been doing a little bit on their own because nowadays if you want to be successful you have to be in peak condition.”

King is also in talks with a possible new manager for the club’s reserve team. He said: “I am still waiting to hear on that but it is certainly something we need to sort out pretty quickly.”

* Volunteer Fred Dunford has stepped down from his role at the club but will continue overseeing the Terra Cotta Club Draw.
