Phil’s troubles with links golf

SANDWICH, ENGLAND – Having failed, utterly, at links golf after two decades as a professional, Phil Mickelson is now clutching at straws.

In his 17 previous British Opens, Mickelson has one top 10 (third in 2004 at Troon) and three top 20 finishes, hardly a stellar record for a player who has 42 wins, including four majors.

His high ball flight has never translated well into the world of links golf. Mickelson declared Tuesday that he is now into a phase of what can only be categorized as self-delusion.

Im entering this year kind of like a fresh start, said Mickelson, who is 41. Im not going to worry about past performance and Im going to try to learn and enjoy the challenge of playing links golf.

Im trying to pretend its my first time here and appreciate playing the ball on the ground on days like this. Im not trying to fix any past poor play. Im trying to come here and play the way links golf should be played.

He took this new approach onto the windswept fairways at Royal St. Georges Tuesday but got the same old result.

I played terrible, he said. But Im having a lot of fun. I feel excited and invigorated.

Good luck with that, Phil.
