London officials mull ticket policy for babies

LONDON (AP) – Organizers of the 2012 London Olympics said Tuesday they would consider options for new mothers who want to bring their babies into venues, after some parents complained that they have to buy full price tickets for their infants.

The London Organizing Committee made the statement after complaints flooded the British parenting website Mumsnet, with pregnant women who bought tickets for themselves – but not for their unborn children – wondering what they could do with babies who were breast-feeding. They argued that a months-old child would not be taking up a seat of its own.

“Of course we understand that some new mums may want to take their babies to events they have tickets to, and we will look at what we can do when the remaining tickets go on sale in April,” the committee said in a statement.

Forget the eagle, the real enemy is the bear.

Despite the broadcast world’s best efforts to create a hockey rivalry between Canada and the United States, Canadians know this morning, if they didn’t already, that the rival that matters most in hockey is Russia – just as it was 40 years ago.

Tuesday night, the two hockey powers met in the semi-finals of the world junior hockey championship and the Russians put a crushing end to any hopes Canada had of a gold medal with a hard-fought 6-5 victory.

In a game that at times had all the high drama of the legendary 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union, the teenaged Russians bested the Canadian teenagers in a game that held every emotion imaginable in sport.

In the end, however, it was pure despair for the Canadians, unable to complete a valiant third-period comeback that simply ran out of time.

The victorious Russians now move on to play Sweden Thursday, when they will defend the gold medal they won last year in Buffalo, while the Canadians will meet Finland, a team they defeated 8-1 in the preliminary round, for the bronze medal – an award many Canadians take to be the ultimate insult in their national game.

For 10 consecutive years, Canada had played in the gold-medal match of this tournament, at one point winning five championships in a row.

The Russians won on precisely the strategy the Canadians had used successfully in the preliminary round played in Edmonton – a fast start – when speedy Yevgeni Kuznetsov scored off a pass from highly touted 2012 draft prospect Nail Yakupov and then went ahead 2-0 when Nikita Nesterov blasted a shot from the point on a Russian power play.

UK spends $1.26 million for Olympic schmoozing

LONDON (AP) – A top British official says the government has spent 750,000 pounds ($1.26 million) on tickets to entertain dignitaries and business leaders at next summers Olympic games in London.

Jonathan Stephens, the most senior civil servant in Britains department of culture, media and sport, told lawmakers Wednesday that offering possible investors or business leaders a free seat would help “secure maximum benefit for Britain” from the 2012 games.

Lawmaker Margaret Hodge, however, said many members of the public cant afford Olympic tickets and would be appalled by the governments outlay.

Britains government is making sharp public spending cuts, which will amount to about 104 billion pounds ($160 billion) by 2016.

Como fundraising campaign reaches goal for new conservatory wing

ST. PAUL, Minn. Supporters of St. Paul’s Como Park Zoo and Conservatory have reached their fundraising goal.

The Campaign for Como recently secured more than $8.5 million in private donations for improvements at the free metro zoo and botanical garden.

The community-led fundraising effort lasted four years. The final gifts were secured in October.

The money will enable Como to break ground on “The Japanese Garden Experience,” a new wing to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory financed entirely by private contributions.

The project will create year-round display space for Como’s bonsai collection and improve access to The Como Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden.

Knight’s plans hit by a bug

ALAN Knight is sweating on the fitness of several players ahead of his first game in charge at Maidenhead United this afternoon.

The new Dorchester Town boss took training on Thursday night but was forced to cut the session short due to a bug in the camp.

Takahashi successfully defends title

SAPPORO, Japan (AP) – Japans Daisuke Takahashi defended his title at the NHK Trophy on Sunday, finishing comfortably ahead of compatriot Takahiko Kozuka after a solid free skate.

Takahashi, first after the short program, finished with a total of 259.75 points, 24.73 points ahead of Kozuka. Ross Miner of the United States placed third with 212.36 points.

Skating to “Blues for Klook,” Takahashi fell on his opening quadruple flip and was downgraded on two jumps late in his routine, but was strong enough overall to take the trophy for the second consecutive year.

“I had some downgrades on my jumps but I feel like I am making progress with my routine,” Takahashi said.

Vikings, stadium officials disagree over when Dome lease expires

St. Paul, Minn. A new disagreement has emerged between the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission and the Minnesota Vikings over just how much time remains on the NFL team’s Metrodome lease.

Commission Chairman Ted Mondale claimed Friday that last year’s dome collapse, which forced the Vikings to play some games elsewhere, also triggered a clause that extended the lease by one year.

Mondale said he learned from his lawyers “a month or two ago” that the collapse triggered the clause in the lease.

“We believe that under the existing agreement, if followed all the way through, that they need to play here another year. That’s my counsel’s position,” Mondale said.

Welsh bets refunded after ‘unfair’ ejection

LONDON (AP) – One bookmaker has decided to refund Rugby World Cup bets on Wales after captain Sam Warburtons sending off in Saturdays 9-8 loss to France.

Warburton was dismissed for a dangerous tip tackle on French winger Vincent Clerc after 18 minutes played in Auckland, New Zealand.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power says on Twitter that “weve decided to refund all losing match bets on Wales. Only fair as Warburton decision was wrong – wales would have won with him.”

Seeming to acknowledge the move was a publicity stunt, Paddy Powers tweet ended with “PPRefund.”
