I’ve said many times on the podcast that this 2012 UGA team reminded me so much of the 2007 UGA team which I have said is the best all-around Bulldog team I’ve ever personally witnessed. What was so key for that 2007 team was a late fumble against Vanderbilt that gave the Bulldogs the ball and the opportunity to kick a game-winning field goal.

A nod towards the not-so distant past is not only inevitable but a tangible boost as the European Tour prepares to host its flagship tournament. The BMW PGA Championship starts at Wentworth on Thursday with 12 key competitors in the field – the members of last year’s successful European Ryder Cup team. The circumstances of their glorious victory over the United States in Medinah adds to the sense of anticipation as top-level golf returns to England.

“It is an enormous boost, to have all 12 playing,” says George O’Grady, the European Tour’s chief executive. “

Lingmerth was two shots clear when darkness halted play on Saturday following an earlier delay of almost two hours due to the threat of lightning.

However, the PGA Tour rookie returned to Sawgrass at 7:10am on Sunday with just the daunting 18th hole to play and ran up a bogey five to card a 69 and set the clubhouse target on 11 under par.

Garcia bogeyed the 15th when play resumed but then birdied the 16th and 17th and saved par with an excellent pitch from 40 yards short of the green on the last to complete a 72.

Woods carded just his second birdie of the round on the 16th to return a 71 as he seeks a fourth win of the season but only his second as a professional at Sawgrass.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, the 2009 champion, and American duo Casey Wittenberg and Ryan Palmer are a shot off the lead on 10 under, with 49-year-old Jeff Maggert another stroke back after a 66 which was completed on Saturday.

England’s David Lynn is three off the pacesetters on eight under with compatriot Lee Westwood a shot behind after a 74 that included an air-shot on his opening hole.

Unlike another member of the world’s top five, who goes by the name of Rory McIlroy, Donald has come alive in the fifth month of the year in recent years. Here at Sawgrass, he has finished fourth and sixth in 2010 and 2011 respectively, while at the BMW PGA Championship in a fortnight’s time, Donald will be going for three wins in succession.

Contrast this with McIlroy’s three missed cuts in a row here and a similarly lamentable record since finishing fifth at Wentworth in 2009.

R&A chief Peter Dawson sounded more desperate than distinguished with his comments reported in several media outlets last week about the debate over anchored putting and the division it has caused in the game.

The PGA Tour is one influential group that has opposed the proposed ban, introduced last fall by the R&A and USGA.

“I’m disappointed at the way that campaign was conducted. It put rule-making on to the negotiating table,” Dawson said.

The 2013 NFL Draft will kick off Thursday night, and the Bulldogs have at least half a dozen players likely to hear their names called over the course of the next three days. One day I am going to correctly project what happens after the first three to five picks of the NFL Draft. Today is not likely to be that day, but it won’t stop me from trying.

A consensus appears to have formed that the Kansas City Chiefs will select Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel with the first selection. But past there things get dicey.

Rule-makers at the Royal & Ancient and the United States Golf Association had cause to pray Angel Cabrera saw off Adam Scott in Sunday evening’s Masters play-off. Instead the Australian’s win has brought back to prominence the debate over whether long putters should be allowed.

Since the end of a consultation period over a ban on anchored putting strokes six weeks ago nothing has been said by either of the governing bodies which proposed it, or the PGA Tour, which is against its implementation from 2016.

Call it pathetic fallacy if you like, but as McIlroy lined up his approach into the 570-yard par 5, the squally lunchtime storm had subsided and the sun had just started to come out. His girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki had emerged from beneath her umbrella and was standing just the other side of the rope. McIlroy had left himself in perfect position, 275 yards from the flag.

Mike Weir addressed a storied past and an uncertain future during a conference call Wednesday to mark the 10th anniversary of his Masters victory.

There was plenty of looking back to that magical moment in Canadian golf on a late Sunday afternoon in April at Augusta in 2003, and rightly so. But there will be plenty of time for that in the two-week run-up to golf’s rite of Spring — especially with a documentary Four Days in April: The Mike Weir Story airing in the days preceding the Masters.

The pressing question is whether or not the first Canadian and left-handed player to win the storied Masters will be able to mark the anniversary of his watershed moment by actually playing in it.

The Nets are fat and happy right now, winners of four out of five on their season long eight-game road trip including each of their last two. The Nuggets are on the other end of the spectrum, hungry and focused after losing back-to-back games following their franchise record 15 game winning streak.

Put those two factors together with this very reasonable pointspread and the case for Denver is perfectly clear.
Danna’s Dawgs came into the SEC Gymnastics Championship meet ranked as the 4th-best team in the conference and riding high off of a recent run of excellent performances. And, honestly, they did perform very well on the night, but had just too many small errors to win the SEC Championship.

And make no mistake, winning the SEC championship is just as difficult as winning the national championship. The SEC has 4 of the top 6 gymnastics programs in the country, according to the current rankings.

You don’t have to strain very hard to hear it, the sound of sports fans telling him it’s all OK now.

Tiger Woods, we love you, we forgive you.

Sports fans speak with their television remotes, so consider the US TV ratings when Woods is in contention at a PGA Tour event on a Sunday versus when he’s not.

His most recent win, at last week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship, near Miami, earned a 4.4 rating during the final round.

His ‘McMeltdown’ at the Honda Classic is well documented, but a closing 65 and a tied-eighth finish in the WGC Cadillac Championship last weekend brings the promise of better things to come for the young maestro.

By contrast, Graeme McDowell rarely shows his disappointments publicly and grinds away steadily.

One reason for that is the guy’s stoic and competitive temperament, and another is the maintenance work he carries out on the mental side of the game.

McDowell’s mind coach Karl Morris has been pleased with the early season form of the player who finished joint third in the Cadillac Championship.

“I was over a couple of times in the States with Graeme last year and I spent a week with him in Lake Nona in January.
