ASHLEY Vickers believes the time is right for Dorchester Town’s current crop of local players to finally achieve something in Blue Square Bet South.
The county town boss overlooked the club’s first pre-season training session on Saturday and believes his men have every chance of realising their potential in the forthcoming campaign.
He told Echosport: “We have added some quality to the squad in the signings of Chris Flood and Ashley Nicholls, and there is no reason why we cannot go on to have a good campaign.
“We have always been perennial strugglers in this division and that is something we have got to end.

Australia’s Adam Scott and the American Hunter Haas shared the lead after the first round of the AT&T National at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania. The pair went round in four-under-par 66s to lead by a stroke from Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela and three more Americans, Dean Wilson, Joe Ogilvie and Kyle Stanley.
Scott, seeking an eighth PGA Tour win, had three birdies in the front nine but dropped a shot after three-putting at the 10th before recovering with birdies at 14 and 18. His 66 equalled his best round on the PGA Tour this year.
The 30-year-old said: “I think the key to my round was hitting a lot of fairways, which gave me an opportunity to hit the greens.
Rory McIlroy’s short-lived reign as world No 3 ended yesterday when Martin Kaymer overtook him by finishing fourth in the French Open after carding a final round of 73 to finish on four-under-par overall.
However, the day belonged to local hero Thomas Levet. With deafening chants of “allez, allez” and “captain, captain” ringing in his ears, Levet rode the emotion to capture a sixth Race to Dubai title with a final round of 70 to win by a stroke on seven-under-par. Levet, ranked 352nd in the world, collected a e500,000 first-prize cheque on the course where, in seven years’ time, he could very well be a Ryder Cup vice-captain.
“Winning the French Open is like winning a Major for me,” he said.
Cesc Fabregas was due to return to Arsenal for pre-season fitness tests today hoping he could seal a move to Barcelona before his current club embark on a tour of the Far-East at the weekend.
The Gunners captain has set his heart on a return to the club he left to move to north London eight years ago but Arsenal and Barca are still haggling over the price that will take Fabregas back to Catalonia.
Arsenal are still thought to want a straight deal of about 39million for the midfielder, whereas European champions Barca would rather pay 34m now and the remaining 5m depending on the player’s appearances and achievements.
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell is currently at the Copa America in Argentina but is due to return to the city later this week to try to push the deal through before Arsenal leave for Kuala Lumpur at the weekend.
RAF Careers have confirmed their sponsorship for this year’s Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic.
The event, the 29th in the series, will take place from Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31 and it is hoped that many of the British teams attempting to qualify for the Olympics will be in Weymouth for the event.
However, final decisions cannot be made until the last minute as it will depend on their positions on the World Tour.
Even if they do not make it, all the other top British teams will be in attendance, as they to claim the top prize on the British Tour.
The added bonus for this year’s Classic is that it comes just one week before the Olympic Beach Volleyball test event, which is being held in Horseguards Parade.
