STRATTON MOUNTAIN, VT — World Cup champion Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT) stormed down the course to victory, earning her third U.S. moguls title at the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships Friday at Stratton Mountain. Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) stood atop the men’s podium to clinch his first U.S. Championship title.
“It’s really satisfying. I’ve put pressure on myself today because coming into to U.S. Championships with a World Cup title makes me feel like I am obligated to win,” explained the Vermont-native Kearney. “But that doesn’t make it easier. It’s still a really competitive field.”
The combination of a gigantic back flip off the top jump, a smooth mute grab 360 on the lower hit and a blazing fast time, Kearney ended the season in the manner she started it – on top.
Alex Ferguson is predicting “absolute chaos” on FA Cup semi-final weekend.
With both matches at Wembley and all four teams heading down from the north west, travel routes are going to be congested on a weekend that also includes Arsenal’s high-profile Premier League encounter with Liverpool, plus the London Marathon.
Ferguson has never viewed Wembley as an ideal venue for the FA Cup semi-finals anyway.
But this season, he feels it makes even less sense.
“There will be 60,000 people coming down from Manchester – think about how much petrol is used for that?” he said.
“Think of the amount of people from the north west driving down there.
“Stoke fans, Bolton fans, City fans, United fans – and on the same weekend Liverpool fans are travelling down.
Martin Laird may not Scotland’s most famous golfer but with his victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando on Sunday he confirmed he is certainly its best golfer.
The 28-year-old Glaswegian, who played college golf in Colorado and has spent almost the entirety of his professional life in the United States, was an impressive winner around a brutal Bay Hill course, recovering from a terrible start to his final round to beat a field that included Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
It was Laird’s second victory in the US and vaulted him to 21st in the world rankings and into the thoughts of many as they seek to identify a potential winner in what could be one of the most open Masters tournaments in years.
“The strengths of my game do fit Augusta National,” he said.
Minneapolis — Workers will begin replacing the Metrodome’s storm-damaged roof Friday.
New fabric panels will be delivered to the downtown Minneapolis stadium, and Birdair Inc. will begin by replacing three diamond-shaped panels that ruptured during a December snowstorm.
Work is expected to continue through July. The project is scheduled to be completed Aug. 1, in time for the Minnesota Vikings’ preseason.
The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission opted to replace the entire roof after engineers said they worried simply repairing torn panels wouldn’t be enough to prevent another failure.
The commission hired Birdair to replace the roof. T

Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington has told his side they must “get stuck in” against Serbia on Friday night to avoid being outplayed.
Despite going into the Euro 2012 Group C qualifier ahead of their opponents in the standings and with a game in hand, Worthington accepts Serbia have the personnel to win handsomely if his men allow them to play.
“We have got to look to get a good start right from kick-off, go and get stuck into them like we have done to teams in the past when we have got results against quality teams,” Worthington said.
“You can name the games – Sweden away, Czech Republic home and away, Poland at home and away, Denmark at home, Slovenia away.
“They are the ones for me that are typical Nigel Worthington performances – hard working, fit for 90 minutes, give nothing up.
“That’s how I want us to play all the time.
Colin Montgomerie has said he would be prepared to captain the 2014 European Ryder Cup team.
Montgomerie had indicated after leading Europe to victory over the United States last October in Wales that he was not interested in doing the job again. But the former US Masters champion Sandy Lyle suggested this week that Montgomerie would be perfect for the role at Gleneagles in 2014.
“I don’t know where Sandy is coming from but that’s just his own opinion, I suppose,” Montgomerie said on the eve of the Andalucian Open.
“But whether or not I am captain in 2014 depends on how things go in 2012 and what the committee’s feelings are.
“I am just there to support the Tour, as I’ve always said,” Montgomerie said.
